The Crucifixion of Christ — at Golgotha outside Jerusalem under Pontius Pilate, in the year traditionally given as AD 33 — is the central event of Christian theology and the most depicted scene in Western art. Sculpted Crucifixions appear from the Carolingian period onward, becoming a focus of devotional intensity in the Gothic age and a permanent fixture of every church, chapel, and Christian home that followed.
