In the second of these candle-bearing angels, the figure adopts a slightly different posture, but the symbolism is unchanged. From the cherubim of the Hebrew tabernacle to the candle-clasping angels of Bernini's baldachin in St Peter's, the angel-with-flame motif carries one of the most enduring promises in religious art: that the warmth and clarity of the human flame is not alone but watched over. Each lighting becomes a small re-enactment of that promise.
