Open hands, palms turned outward — the orans pose — is one of the oldest gestures in Christian art, depicting prayer, welcome, and the Crucifixion itself anticipated in standing posture. The open-handed Christ communicates that nothing is hidden, nothing withheld: an iconographic gesture inherited from late antiquity and carried into every later Christian century.
