Saint George slays dragon statue
Saint George, soldier of Diocletian's army and Christian martyr (died c. AD 303), became the patron saint of England, Georgia, Portugal, Catalonia, and a dozen other nations, largely through the medieval legend that he killed a dragon to save a princess. The story spread through the Crusades and became one of the most retold tales of Christian Europe. He is depicted in arms — lance lifted, horse rearing — as the eternal image of the believer who confronts evil head-on.
