Angel praying on its knee

An angel on bended knee is the iconographic shorthand for adoration. Throughout Christian painting, the kneeling angel appears at the Annunciation — where Gabriel kneels before the Virgin — at the Nativity, and in countless altarpieces flanking the enthroned Christ or Madonna. The gesture is striking precisely because angels, who in scripture have no need of worship by humans, kneel themselves before what is greater. Their humility frames the entire economy of devotion: even messengers of heaven bow their knee.
