Mary in prayer — hands joined, eyes closed or lifted — is the model of Christian contemplation, the figure to whom believers turn when they themselves wish to pray. Catholic tradition holds her as the first and greatest intercessor, the one whose own prayer at the Annunciation made possible the whole story that followed. The praying Madonna is a kind of mirror: the believer prays through her, and learns to pray from her.
