Angel sitting on a column statue

Angels seated on columns belong to a specific iconographic strand of Christian art rooted in the meditation of Saint Bernard and the writings of late medieval mystics, in which the column became the symbol of Christ's passion and the angel a witness to it. Renaissance painters such as Bramantino and Carpaccio painted angels resting on the column of the flagellation as silent watchers of the mystery. The motif transformed slowly into a contemplative pose — the angel pausing at the place of suffering to reflect.
