Whether titled "Madonna del Granduca", "Madonna of the Chair", or hundreds of other names, the standing Virgin holding the Christ Child has been produced in countless variations across nearly twenty centuries. The composition is the Christian visual equivalent of a foundation stone: every later iconography of motherhood, in Western art, returns to this image and adapts it for its own moment.
