Virgin Mary crying statue
The weeping Madonna — the Mater Lacrimosa — gained particular force in Spanish Baroque sculpture under the hand of artists like Juan de Juni and Pedro de Mena, who carved tears into wood with such realism that worshippers believed the statues themselves wept. The image of Mary in grief gave the faithful permission to grieve in turn — a powerful spiritual instrument in centuries marked by plague, war, and loss.
