Standing armoured and alert, the Spartan warrior embodies the ideal that the city of Sparta produced more reliably than any other society in history: the citizen prepared, from boyhood until death, to fight for his community. Spartan funerary law allowed gravestones only for women who died in childbirth and men who died in battle — the only two duties the city held as equal in honour.
