Leonidas in Defence with Sword
When the Spartan spear was broken, the sword came out — and the line held. This sculpture shows Leonidas in that final defensive moment, blade ready, shield raised. It is a portrait of resolve under impossible pressure: the king who, when offered surrender, replied "molon labe" — come and take them. Few words in history have travelled further or carried more weight.
