Spartan Warrior in defense
The defensive Spartan stance — shield braced, spear low — was the bedrock of phalanx warfare. Each warrior protected not himself but the man to his left, whose right side his shield covered. This interlocked system meant that breaking the Spartan line was nearly impossible, and that personal courage was indistinguishable from collective duty. To stand in defence was to stand for the man beside you.
