Little Angel thinking statue

The thinking angel — chin on hand, gaze inward — joins a long visual tradition that begins with the seated philosophers of antiquity and runs through Rodin's Thinker and the mourning angels of Christian funerary sculpture. The smaller cherubic form in this composition makes the inheritance more tender. Children in religious art are rarely shown lost in thought, and the gesture asks the viewer to take their inner life seriously: even the youngest of the heavenly host has something to consider.
