Greek hoplites, including Spartan kings, sometimes hurled their spears at engaging cavalry or distant enemy lines. This pose — arm drawn back, body coiled in preparation — was a favourite of classical sculptors who specialised in capturing the instant before action. Leonidas in this stance becomes more than a warrior: he becomes the moment of decision, the breath before the world changes.
