Demeter, Goddess of Harvest

Demeter was the goddess of the harvest, of grain, of the fertile earth itself. When her daughter Persephone was abducted to the Underworld by Hades, her grief plunged the world into eternal winter — until Zeus restored Persephone for half of each year, giving us the seasons. Her mysteries at Eleusis, the most secret rites of antiquity, promised initiates a blessed afterlife and shaped Greek spiritual life for nearly two thousand years.
