Pot-bearing angels recall a particular biblical iconography — the angel of the Apocalypse who carries the vial or censer before the throne of God, scattering incense or pouring out the prayers of the saints. In Eastern Orthodox iconography the censer-bearing angel is a constant presence in liturgical scenes.
