Angel sitting on a sphere statue type 4

The angel on the sphere is one of the rarest and most poetic motifs in Western religious art, most famously realised in Auguste Rodin's marble of 1881. The sphere is the world, the orb the angel rests upon yet does not own — the cosmos held in balance under a watchful gaze. In medieval cosmology, the spheres of the heavens were thought to be turned by the celestial intelligences, and an angel poised atop one captures that quiet authority: not commanding the universe but accompanying it.
