Venus of Milos statue replica
Discovered in 1820 on the Cycladic island of Milos by a peasant clearing land, the Aphrodite of Milos quickly became one of the most famous statues in the world. The marble figure, carved around 100 BCE and now in the Louvre, has lost both arms — and what those arms once held has been the subject of two centuries of speculation. Some scholars proposed a mirror, some an apple, some a spear, others a bow. What is undisputed is the spiral twist of the body, the way the falling drapery seems on the edge of slipping further, and the calm sufficiency of the face.
