The Chariot of Achilles
The chariot of Achilles is one of the most charged images in the Homeric epic. In Book 23 of the Iliad, Achilles drives his chariot at full speed three times around the body of Patroclus and then around the corpse of Hector, dragging the Trojan prince behind him at dawn. The horses Xanthus and Balius, immortal gifts of Poseidon, weep for their master's grief. The composition compresses the most famous moment of ancient heroism into a single tableau: speed, rage, mourning and divine companionship at once.
