Artemis bust statue
Artemis, twin sister of Apollo, was worshipped across the Greek world in dozens of local forms — huntress of the Arcadian forests, mistress of beasts in Asia Minor, lunar goddess of the Ionian islands, protector of women and the young at Brauron in Attica. Her sanctuary at Ephesus housed one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Bust portraits of Artemis emphasise her cool, alert features — the face of a goddess always on the verge of motion, ready to draw her bow or vanish into the woods.
