Aphrodite sits on her knees - Greek Goddess of beauty
The crouching Aphrodite is one of the most original poses invented for the goddess in Greek sculpture, traditionally attributed to the Bithynian sculptor Doidalsas of the third century BCE. Caught in the moment of bathing, Aphrodite turns her gaze over her shoulder and gathers her body inward — a figure of complete and unhurried self-possession. The pose travelled across the Hellenistic world, became a favourite of Roman copyists, and was preserved in some of the finest marble figures of Imperial Rome.
