Alexander the Great on Horseback

At twenty-three, Alexander of Macedon marched east with thirty thousand men and conquered the largest empire the world had ever seen. His warhorse Bucephalus — the only mount Alexander could tame as a boy — carried him from Greece to the Indus, into legend. Equestrian portraits of Alexander shaped every imperial statue that followed, from Caesar to Napoleon, and this composition belongs to a lineage of art that has glorified leadership for more than two thousand years.
