Poseidon Bust

The portrait bust of Poseidon condenses the god into his most recognisable features — the wave-tossed beard, the deep-set eyes that have seen the bottom of every sea, the brow furrowed by storms. This sculptural type developed in Hellenistic Greece and became the model by which the lord of the oceans would be remembered through every later century of Western art.
