Cycladic face type 2 statue

Cycladic faces from the third millennium BC are among the most haunting objects in all of art — flat, almond-eyed, abstracted to a degree that no civilisation would attempt again for nearly five thousand years. Type 2 typically denotes a slightly more naturalistic head with a defined nose and forehead. These were carved on the Aegean islands of Naxos, Paros, and Keros, found mostly in graves, and remain a primary source of the modernist revolution of the 20th century.
